Happy Pitcher and Catcher's Eve

This record cold is just a bit much this week. Especially with spring training right on our heels. My blog suffers this time of the year due to the time I have to spend on the computer is spent looking into sleeper picks and what pitchers to take first in my Fantasy Baseball Draft.

Stay warm out there.

This is one of those lost gems put out by Empire Video back in the VHS hay day. Also one of my guilty pleasures. The movie is so crazy and bad that I just eat it up. I have to say this is a big step for Kino Lorber they are not known for putting out lost Science Fiction/Horror movies.  This will be a blind by its one of those that has eluded me on DVD.

Source: Netflix Streaming

Directors:
Chris Riedell
Nick Riedell

Writers:
Mamrie Hart

Stars:
Grace Helbig
Chester See
Ellen Karsten

Plot:
With her personal and professional life in shambles, Elise ends up having to take a job as a counselor at her old summer camp. There, she reunites with two estranged friends who attended camp and never left. When the future of the camp is put in jeopardy, the three friends must band together to save it, changing the course of their lives forever.

If you have never attended summer camp you will not love this movie as much as I did. See I went to MDA Summer Camp for 20 years. I walked away when my camper became too old to go anymore. Then my new life took over and thank god I never lost those friendships I made back then. Just like the movie I was away for 10 years. Now I did not have my wife leave me or lose my job like the movie but I did have a best friend (Thanks, Sis) bring me back into a world that not everybody understands. But I world I missed very much.

Camp Takota is a buddy movie in the best of ways. Sure you can predict the movie in the first 5 minutes but if you take the time to sit and lose yourself you will find a perfect gem to spend your time with.

The cast in this movie really gel's and get into your head with their up and down lifestyles. It really took me to a place where you can feel the peace and tranquility that is summer camp. Everything does get tied together in the end. Sure, they all live happily ever after. But the journey to get there is worth it. What you will not get is a meatballs clone, but you will get this very heartwarming movie that should make some of your must see list's for the year.

My Bunk Mates from last year

To my sister, I thank you for bringing me back into the camp mix! I'm pretty sure if you watch this you will identify with the cast like I did. If I could go back in time I would find a camp to do all year long.

Heartwarming Adventure with Brains...

Thrills, chills, spills! Live the power of the... BMX Bandits

BMX Bandits
1983 | Color | 88 Min. | 2.35.1 | PG | Adventure | Dolby | Nilsen Premiere

Source: Netflix Streaming

Director:
Brian Trenchard-Smith

Writers:
Patrick Edgeworth
Russell Hagg

Stars:
David Argue
John Ley
Nicole Kidman

Plot: Two BMX expert bikers and a friend of theirs (Kidman) become entangled with a group of bank robbers after discovering a carton of walkie-talkies.

We will always have these movies that others talk about and it peeks your curiosity. BMX Bandits is one of those movies. Of course, there is Nicole Kidman with all that curly hair that everybody must like. And how about those bikes? I was 13 when this came out and at that time I was all about my bike so I would have watched this over and over again. The movie does hold up over time with a fun story for kids and plenty of BMX bike action. But what does not hold up his the soundtrack and the sound effects.

I'm pretty sure if I was writing this in 1983 there would be a different story. They fit the era but was a little hard on the ears today. The soundtrack was typical 80's synth pop nothing new or groundbreaking here. The cast works well together and the story moves along at a fast pace. This is not a movie for everybody and not to sure anybody over 35 will care too much to sit and watch an old school Australian movie about BMX bikes.

Nichole I give your BMX hair...

3 Bloody Brains

#Fthismoviefest short recap.

This past weekend was the 4 annual all Twitter-driven film festival. Nothing better than sitting in the comfort of my own home talking movie's with other folks from around the globe watching the same movies.

2015 marked my third year taking part in the movie festival. And every year it gets bigger and a whole hell of a lot of fun. I already pledge that I will make this bigger in my household next year. I plan on having friends over, food, and an overloaded WiFi.

I'm telling you if you have not heard of this yet you owe it to yourself to look into in. Admittedly it is a little hard to watch and tweet and the same time but there are no rules saying you can't just watch the movie.

I know because I just wanted to sit and watch Hard Target and all its coolness! Ok, so a quick review of the movies I did stick around to watch.

First up the uber fun and completely pun driven Demolition Man. It was a lot of fun to revisit this bad boy with a group of people. So many things that I forgot about and the best thing the things that were pointed out to me. I remember when this movie was out thinking how cute Sandra Bullock was. It was fun to hear I was not alone. If you have not seen this in a while it's a fun and fast 2 hours.

Next up Army of Darkness. Nothing new to share with you here.  Well, ok let me share with you two stories. First I worked at the theater when this was out (Still own the one sheet) in fact I was the projectionist which means I put the movie together and was the first to watch it, well sort of. See being a manager I guess you could say I smuggled some die hard friends in along with a few beers. Oh, the simple days. On a different note, when I was talking to Bruce Campbell one day we talked about dating and the hazards of Rockford, Il girls. It was one of those odd moments when you have something in common with somebody and you can laugh about. FYI, his first wife was from Rockford.

Now on to Hard Target, this was the movie I could not wait for. I have not seen it in years. Again I might still have the one sheet for this. If not I know I have a button you had to wear to promote this movie. Everything is classic about this movie Van Damme's hair, John Woo's slow motion cam. and Dove's. This movie had some of the best tweets. If you have not seen this shame on you. The only thing that would have made this better would have been a been a viewing
of Roadhouse right after.

The other two movies where True Romance that I just did not want to sit through. And Jurassic Park that I had hoped to make it back home for but did not.

I'm having way too much trouble putting this into words so I strongly suggest hanging out with us next year instead. I do want to thanks, F this movie for coming up with such a great idea. How they come up with 4 to 5 tiles that keep everybody happy is beyond me. Also need to thank my wife for allowing me to sit on my butt laughing at a computer while a movie is on the TV, It's always nice to know I have support in my geeky world that I enjoy living in.

Unleash your inner beast!

Welcome To The Jungle

Source: Netflix Streaming

Director: Rob Meltzer

Writer: Jeff Kauffmann

Stars:
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Adam Brody
Rob Huebel

Plot:
Chris is a workplace weakling who doesn't have the courage to stand up to the slick office bully, Phil, who steals all his ideas, and he has yet to muster the courage to ask out cute HR manager, Lisa. Even Chris' only friend, Jared (Eric Edelstein), a sarcastic slacker IT guy who secretly monitors everyone's porn intake, slams Chris for being a sissy.

But when a team-building "wilderness seminar" goes horribly wrong, and unhinged ex-marine teambuilding coach Storm Rothchild gets mauled by a tiger, Chris and his co-workers find themselves stranded on a deserted tropical island with no rescue in sight – and someone's going to have to step up and take charge. Phil quickly proclaims himself "God" of the island – but Chris has Boy Scout skills and would be far better suited to lead the group if he could overcome his fear – of everything. Can Chris finally start acting like a man and face Phil, release his inner beast, get them rescued and get the girl? Or will Phil triumph, as usual while Chris cowers like an effeminate weakling?

With all the hype from F This Movies Film Fest and the movie Hard Target I was jonesing for a Van Damme movie in the worst way. I also wanted to pick something I have not seen yet. I remember the trailer for Welcome to the Jungle and thinking that looks pretty good. So when I was flipping through Netflix and stumbled on to this I thought why not.

The first act in this movie was horrible it took every ounce of life in me to continue. It really starts off as an Office Space rip off with a mix match cast. For the first 20 minutes, I kept wondering what did I get myself into. Then good old Van Damme shows up and I kind of wish he didn't. He looks so bad and way to old to play this type of part. Not the Bloodsport that I was looking forward to.

Once they land on this island and Van Damme disappears this movie gets better. Yeah, I said it he goes missing and the movie he is the star in becomes watchable. What is up with that?? In fact, I sat up and paid attention. The young cast started to gel and carry the movie quite nicely.

With that being said, there is still nothing new here we have seen it all before but it becomes very watchable. Even in the third act when Van Damme show's back up. I liked the cast they played off of each other very well. The story was the same old same old, but that was fine. The movie is meant to entertain you for an hour and a half, for the most part it does that. So if you can get past the first 20 minutes this movie does its job.

So for you Mr. Van Damage I give you...

Director: Tom Gries

Writers: Howard B. Kreitsek

Stars:
Charles Bronson
Robert Duvall
Jill Ireland
Randy Quaid

Plot: Jay Wagner is framed by the mob and sent to prison in Mexico. His wife, Ann tries to get him out. She then turns to bush pilot Nick Colton for help. And Colton is all to eager to do it. But the men who framed Jay will do what they have to make sure he doesn't escape.

God what is with me and all these slow burn movies I'm watching lately. Here I was trying to mix it up a bit and fell way short. Yeah, I know this was a 1970's movie and  I should know better. But It's Charles Bronson for crap sakes there should be things blowing up and people dieing left and right. All we get is a movie of a tough guy learning to fly a helicopter and airplane. Woopty frigging do! And Robert Duvall is so stoned and ugly in this movie you almost do not recognize him.

The good, one really cool death scene on a runway... yeah that's about it.

Sorry Charlie...

Time In The Minors
2010 | Color | 85 Min. | 1.33.1 | NA | Documentry | 5.1 | Starz Entertainment

Source: Starz YouTube Channel

Director: Tony Okun

Writer: Tony Okun

Stars:
John Drennen
Tony Schrager

Plot: Every year in June approximately 1500 new players out of high school and college are chosen from the amateur baseball draft and sent to play in the minor leagues...

Every year starting in December the baseball itch starts to rev up. Especially after the off season both Chicago teams had. And in January I find myself watching MLB Network religiously. And by February Fantasy Baseball is ready to go with pitchers and catchers reporting. So after reading about this movie I made it my mission to seek it out. I was shocked that it's on youtube from the Starz Network for free, not something put up illegally.

The documentary follows the lives of two minor league players on their journey to the big show.
John Drennen, a High School All-American from San Diego, California was selected in the first round of the 2005 amateur baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians. Tony Schrager, a 1998 and 6th-round draft pick out of Omaha, Nebraska is an 8-year veteran of the minor leagues.

The 2006 season may be Tony's last shot to make it. What's it like trying to make it to the Major Leagues? I was amazed and drawn in by the ups and downs of their daily struggles. You really get a sense of what they go through and how it can and will change every second.

I can't say this is for everybody it is a very slow pace movie about a game that most find to be boring. For for me a baseball fan head to toe this gave me a new look at a sport that I love. If you are a baseball fan it's worth a look.

Mega Mogul Roger Corman

Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel
2011 | Color | 89 Min. | 1.37.1 | R | Documentry | 5.1 | Anchor Bay

Director: Alex Stapleton

Writer: Alex Stapleton

Stars:
Roger Corman
Martin Scorsese
Quentin Tarantino
Robert DeNiro

A documentary on DIY producer/director Roger Corman and his alternative approach to making movies in Hollywood.

Jack Nicholson openly wept for his mentor Roger Corman during filming of this documentary. That's how powerful this Doc was. I was moved myself for the deep respect Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorses, and Ron Howard had for Corman. And I had no clue Corman gave William Shatner his first role! And for a movie I have never heard of. "The Intruder" is something I feel the need to track down and soon! We all know Roger has put out some great B movies, but I will admit my shock at how many hit movies he had as well. Sometimes it's good to pull back the horror movie curtain and take a look outside.

Death Race had a huge impact on my life growing up as well as Galaxy of Terror, Slumber Party Massacre and the movie that blew me away Piranha, I can say safely Corman made the low budget sci-fi/horror movie fun to me. I have always watched his back catalog with The Wasp Woman being one that I can watch over and over as well as Navy Vs The Night Monsters pure classic gold!

Now I will have to track down a few movie's that I did not realize he had a hand in like The Wild Angels. Peter Fonda's interview was very interesting for this movie. I never knew it paved the way for Easy Rider.

Also need to find Martin Scorsese's Box Car Bertha. Had no clue that was a Corman/Scorsese joint. The documentary was very eye opening and moving. It was so cool to see how many people's lives he has touched and continues to do so. I guess after 410 movies under his belt your going to see a few big names before they became mega stars or B-movie regulars. If your a movie fan you owe it to yourself to track down one of the 4 Documentary's for Corman. Has his portfolio keeps growing in 2015 including the sequel to his SyFi collaboration Sharktopus Vs Mermantula!

The extras on the DVD are not bad as well. You get a few extended interviews and special messages to Roger that are pretty good. Also a hand full of Trailers. Sound is very well balanced for a 5.1 mix. The rear speakers never overpower the movie. Now if you will excuse me I need to watch some B-movie cheese!

Thank You, Roger I give you...
